Butlins Skegness was the first Butlins holiday resort opened in Skegness in 1936. Skegness is a town and seaside resort in Lincolnshire, a civil parish located in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, eastern England. As of 2001, Skegness had a total resident population of 18,910, but it is not just the resident population of the small seaside town that makes it so remarkable or that puts it on the map – it is Butlins.
Butlins is a chain of large holiday camps established in the United Kingdom, founded by Billy Butlin in 1936 with the objective of providing affordable holidays for ordinary British families. Butlins Skegness is one of the few properties of the chain that remains open after the 1970s, known through the 1980s and 1990s as Funcoast World. There have been ten such camps built from the ?0s through the late 1960s, counting a couple in Ireland and in the Bahamas. Some of them were accompanied with large Butlins hotels, such as the one in Spain, as well as a number of smaller holiday parks such as those in England and France. Other Butlins establishments include the revolving restaurant in the post office tower in London.
Today, Butlins still operates in three such major resorts across the region, notably Bognor Regis, Minehead, and Skegness; but the Skegness facility is arguably the most popular of the lot. The hotel building in Butlins Skegness had been closed in 1974, but the building remains standing and today is used as an amusement arcade within the resort. Now run by leisure brand, Bourne Leisure, along with other such resorts in Warner, Haven and other parts of the UK, Butlins Skegness runs a wide assortment of family fun activities and entertainments.
Debatably one of the best things about Butlins Skegness is that most of the entertainment and activity functions carried out on the facility, which are provided by Redcoats, are included in the price of a single holiday, As such, all a family man needs to do for the most part is pay once for the holiday, and immediately have access to the best of the experience. With facilities that include other treats like accommodation, Splash Waterworld, children’s activities, sports and recreation, and a skyline pavilion, Butlins Skegness is a once in a lifetime experience that few people in the world are capable of frowning at.
